The Young Optometrists (YO) group will be among the exhibitors at the inaugural SILMO Sydney optical fair.
YO, which was established in early 2012 by Dr Carina Trinh and five fellow UNSW alumni, offers support, resources and career guidance to optometrists in their first decade of practice.
“Our goals are to provide friendly learning environments, [share] knowledge amongst our peers, promote the understanding of career pathways and facilitate career development opportunities, and build relationships between young optometrists and experienced optometrists and health professionals,” Dr Trinh stated.
She said that exhibiting at SILMO Sydney offered a “fantastic opportunity” to increase awareness of the association as well as to “come up to speed” with industry trends and issues.
“With the internationally renowned reputation SILMO has, we are very excited to see what all the hype is about and also to network with optometrists and dispensers,” Dr Trinh commented.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to talk face-to-face with young optometrists about what we can offer th and to circulate our calendar of events for 2017.”
Mr Gary Fitz-Roy, managing director of SILMO Sydney organiser Expertise Events, said YO’s vision and commitment aligned with the optical fair’s mission.
“SILMO Sydney is about being totally inclusive and setting a direction for the future of the industry that excites and engages,” he said. “[That’s] why it’s so fitting to have such a progressive group involved.”
YO hosts regular events and education sessions to encourage networking and provide opportunities to upskill. The association also reaches out to optometry students to offer support through their studies and help th quickly and smoothly transition into the industry after graduation.
“[We’re] in the process of trying to put together a social event around the time of SILMO Sydney to get the chance to interact with young optometrists who aren’t yet a part of the association,” Dr Trinh said.
In Septber this year, YO also exhibited for the first time at the Specsavers Clinical Conference held in Brisbane to encourage optometrists in the early stages of their career to utilise the association’s resources.
SILMO Sydney will be held from 9-11 March 2017 at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.
