Optical Dispensers Australia (ODA), Eyecare Plus, ProVision, Vision Connection and Eyebenefit are working together to guide entrepreneurs and open the door to successful business partnership and practice ownership.
They are inviting dispensers and optometrists to join an interactive live webinar at 7pm (AEDT) on Wednesday 25th February to hear from a panel of experts and have their questions answered.
In a release, ODA said optical dispensing was a profession with more breadth and opportunity than many realised, including optical dispensers themselves.
“While the role is often framed as a support position within an optometry practice, the truth is that qualified dispensers can build full, rewarding careers that extend well beyond the dispensing desk,” ODA said.
“One of the most significant, yet frequently overlooked pathways is practice ownership.
“Dispensers already hold deep product knowledge, strong patient-care skills, and practical insight into how successful practices operate day to day, giving them a solid foundation for leadership and business ownership. Whether as the sole owner or in business partnership.”
It said that, despite this, many talented dispensers were unaware that owning or co-owning an independent optical practice was even an option.
The industry had traditionally defaulted to an “optometrist-led” model, leading many dispensers to assume they lacked the authority or qualifications to take this next step.
“In reality, plenty of dispensers across Australia have successfully opened independent practices, partnered with optometrists or taken over existing stores, and built thriving businesses centred on exceptional dispensing expertise.
“The real barrier isn’t permission – it’s awareness, confidence, and access to guidance.”
It said organisations such as ODA, Eyecare Plus and ProVision were available to guide young optometrists and dispensers through the business side of practice ownership and business partnerships, helping them avoid common mistakes and navigate the planning, financing, and acquisition processes.
