Vision Australia is keen to remind eyecare professionals of its specialised employment services that can have a profound impact on the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired.
The organisation, which is the leading national provider of vision loss services helping more than 26,000 people annually, says finding a job can be rewarding for visually impaired patients, playing a vital role in their independence. It also provides financial security, builds social and professional networks and enhances knowledge and skills.
Full time employment rates for people who are blind or have low vision are considered poor, sitting at 24% in Australia, 28% in Canada and 32% in New Zealand.

Access to government funding
Once referred to its services, Vision Australia said it can help vision impaired patients source government funding to buy technology and equipment required for work at no cost to the employer.
Funding can cover workplace modifications and assistive technology like computer software that magnifies the screen and portable notetaking devices. The costs of related training are also covered. Eligible organisations can apply for wage-subsidy programs which Vision Australia will help access.
“Disability Employment Services (DES) is the Australian Government’s employment service that supports people with disability to find and keep a job,” Vision Australia stated.
“The program does not require any National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding, although NDIS funding can be used to develop skills that assist in employment, such as orientation and mobility, adaptive technology, and occupational therapy.
“Once employed, DES provides post-placement support to ensure employment is maintained and to address any issues that may arise. DES can provide ongoing support at work through the WorkAssist program, including funding for necessary workplace modifications.”
