EssilorLuxottica scientists have harnessed the power of artificial intelligence and combined it with an understanding of consumer lifestyles to create its best overall progressive lens yet, Varilux XR series.

The lens –  available to Australian optical practices from 1 July 2023 – represents the latest advance in the Varilux brand, which originated in 1959 and boasts around 70 patents.

According to the manufacturer, in today’s modern lifestyles, eyes are moving 100,000 times a day to process visual information. Moreover, researchers from EssilorLuxottica studied more than 6,500 consumers to enrich their understanding of presbyopes’ lifestyles and visual challenges.

The group has gathered more than one million pieces of data to develop what is describes as a “breakthrough behavioural modelling system” that predicts how presbyope individuals will look at objects around them.

“The power of artificial intelligence lies in the quantity, quality and variety of data and the way they’re analysed,” Mr Norbert Gorny, co-chief operating officer at EssilorLuxottica, said.

“The insights we established from data collected from customer orders, real life wearer tests, in store measurements and physiological models are exclusive to EssilorLuxottica. Thanks to the digital twinning technology, we can now establish a visual behaviour profile for every single prescription and provide the first eye-responsive lens that respects the natural behaviour of the eye.”

It’s expected Varilux XR series wearers will benefit from instant sharpness, even in motion, with up 49% more vision volume1 compared to Varilux X series. In independent third-party tests, 87% of consumers, mostly wearing premium progressive lens, preferred Varilux XR series to their previous lenses, after trying them, with no change in their prescription2

Additionally, 95% of wearers adapted to their new lenses on the first day.

In keeping with customers’ expectations and EssilorLuxottica’s commitment to reduce its environmental footprint, Varilux XR series is an eco-designed progressive lens. With a new semi-finished lens, new in-lab processes and a sustainable delivery kit for consumers, plastic consumption will be reduced by 19% compared to Varilux X series, leading to a decrease of 6% in CO2 emissions, EssilorLuxottica stated.

“Varilux XR series highly contributes to the sustainable goal of EssilorLuxottica as certified an external bureau for environmental impact assessment,” the company said.

The Varilux XR series is now available in Australia and will be locally produced at the Essilor facility in Silverwater, NSW.

Customers have the opportunity to view Varilux XR series and the personalisation protocols exclusive to the EssilorLuxottica partners at the O=MEGA23 trade show in Melbourne 8-10 September, 2023. The EssilorLuxottica booths will be located in stands D1, D2, E1 and E2.
