To celebrate the opening of the new Brighton practice, Specsavers design partner Alex Perry spent the morning running a frame styling session in-store for local shoppers before and after he and professional services director Peter Larsen formally declared the 300th store open.
Following the opening, Insight spoke to Peter Larsen about the story so far and also about future plans. He said that reaching the 300-store mark so quickly was a testament to the way optometrists and dispensers had taken a leap of faith on the Specsavers model early on but that their faith had now “been re-paid handsomely”.
Asked if the store opening program would now slow, Mr Larsen said: “The concept of an increasing number of stores probably masks the reality of our growth. Over the past two years a major focus for us has been on expansion of existing stores – moving one-and-two-consulting-room practices to larger prises with three and four consulting rooms.
“In 2015 we will open up to 20 brand-new Specsavers stores in Australia but we will expand more than 60 into far larger prises.”It is making a big difference. With expansions in place we now have some practices in the $5 million range for annual turnover and our average now sits at well over $2 million per store.
