Specsavers attracts top international talent for dispensing conference

Taking place next month, Jalie will headline the national roadshow-style event and feature alongside Mr Donald Crichton, president of the Association of Dispensing Opticians New Zealand and vice president of the International Opticians Association (IOA), as well as Ms Alicia Thompson and Ms Miranda Richardson from the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO).The one-day event, which aims improve dispensing standards across the entire profession, is also open to non-Specsavers staff, and will be held in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney from August 4–9.Jalie, who is a renowned for his expertise on the design of spectacle lenses and author of the core dispensing text Principles of Ophthalmic Lenses, will travel from the UK to present on aspheric lenses.

He will discuss various types of aspherical surfaces, as well as how the surface astigmatism arises, and how to calculate the required asphericity. His presentation will also cover how this feature can be adopted to produce flatter, thinner lenses, and how the geometry of atoroidal surfaces can be used in the design of bi-aspheric lenses for astigmatic prescriptions.Jalie‘s credentials extend into being appointed the Visiting Professor in Optometry at the UK’s Ulster University and Essilor Acady Europe. Among other achievents, he has also authored some 200 papers on ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses (IOLs) and dispensing, and holds patents for aspheric spectacle lenses and IOLs.

Meanwhile, Crichton is scheduled to open the conference with a lecture highlighting the value of dispensing professional development and to provide an introduction to the IOA.Thompson, who is the ABDO director of professional examinations, will present at her third SDC. Her lecture and case discussion workshop will highlight the importance of understanding how a typical day appears for a patient, as well as how they use their spectacles to provide the best dispensing recommendations.Her colleague Richardson – the assistant director of professional examinations at the ABDO – will be returning for her second conference. In a lecture accompanied by peer discussion, she will explore prescription analysis and how to meet complex patient requirents. Examples of seingly impossible dispensing requests to laboratories will also be presented for discussion.The conference will also feature Ms Sofia Fazal, professional services manager at Carl Zeiss Vision UK, who will discuss the visual dands that digital devices place on the eye before the full onset of presbyopia.Finally, Younger Optics national sales and marketing manager Mr Craig Johnston will present on polarisation and why it is used in the spectacle world.   Specsavers Dispensing Conference Dates- Perth, WA – Sunday, August 4
