According to the acady, attendees engaged in top-flight learning, experienced new products and technologies and met optometrists and vision scientists who are both analysing the data from research studies and bringing the results to their clinics and practices.
The acady added that traumatic brain injury was a featured topic of several events, starting with the Plenary Session ‘Today’s Research, Tomorrow’s Practice: Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)’, where Douglas Smith, MD, director, Center for Brain Injury and Repair at Pennsylvania University, and William Milberg, PhD, and Regina McGlinchey, PhD, of Harvard Medical School spoke to a packed house on the effects of MTBI as they exist in a complex matrix of biological, psychological and social issues.
Though there were no elections for officers this year – “It is the end of the first year of the officers’ two-year terms,” Helen Viksnins, MEd, FAAO, director of education and mber relations, said.

Similarly, the President’s Banquet saw 194 new Fellows inducted into the acady after completing a candidacy process that includes submitting written work donstrating their skills as an optometrist and sitting for an oral exam at the annual meeting.
