Eyerising International will have its red light therapy device on display at the 2023 Myopia Progression in Children Conference (MPIC), featuring alongside many other new therapeutic interventions at the all-day event taking place in Sydney on 10 June.
MPIC strives to update attendees on the wide range of innovations for the intervention of myopia progression in children available in Australia.
In addition to HOYA’s MiYOSMART spectacle lens, and the release of the Stellest lens by EssilorLuxottica late last year, ZEISS will soon release a new lens design aimed at retarding the elongation of the eye with a different peripheral defocus profile.
Explanation and discussion of the different lens designs and research results will be available for review at MPIC.
Event organiser, NSW ophthalmologist Dr Loren Rose, said a comprehensive review of myopia management in Australia will be presented and discussed.
“TGA-approved atropine 0.01% (Eikance) is becoming common practice, as are the slightly higher atropine concentrations available from compound pharmacies, with recent publications demonstrating efficacy to be dose-responsive. A stepwise approach will be discussed to ensure safety and efficacy are achieved for all our patients,” she said.
Another innovation gaining attention is red light therapy.
“The use of red light therapy to control axial growth, refraction and choroidal thickness has been published locally and abroad with dramatic results,” Rose said.
“Adaptation of a red light therapy device initially used for amblyopia treatment overseas is now available for myopic children to be prescribed for two intervals of three minutes daily. The publications demonstrate a substantially reduced axial length progression rate. With more studies on the way, Eyerising International will have its red light therapy device present for discussion and use at MPIC 2023.”
The use of axial length and machines to measure it will also be available on the day to add to the comprehensive review of myopia management in children.
Difficult cases will be discussed by an extended panel. Joining Dr Loren Rose, Dr Trent Sandercoe, and Dr Shanel Sharma, will be two new members, Ms Mariella Coluccio and Ms Homma Ebrahimi, to troubleshoot and provide tips on the day.
Optometry Australia has awarded a maximum of 6 CPD hours for the event.
