Cataract surgery product company Rayner Australia is re-launching the Sophi phaco system in the Australian market, after the acquisition of its manufacturer, This Ag, in January 2024.

“Sophi redefines the requirements of a perfect phaco system by focusing on the points of view of the surgeon and the surgical team,” the company said.

“The result is a high-end device which sets new standards in mobility, simplicity and safety.”

Mobility, simplicity and safety

According to Rayner, Sophi is free of disturbing cables and tubes, which is said to be a “revolutionary” step providing more flexibility and a crucial workflow improvement in the operating room.

This allows for mobility, where users can conveniently set up, operate, and repeatedly rearrange the device.

With a simple design, Sophi is also said to streamline the surgery process.

“The surgical team should be able to focus entirely on the patient – and Sophi enables you to do just that,” Rayner said. “With modern assistance systems and clever control elements, Sophi creates a simple surgery process.”

The system can be parametrised intuitively, assist with intelligent sensor technology and automatically adjusts parameters in critical situations.

Rayner said that Sophi was designed to optimise system efficiency by eliminating uncertainty, and has an integrated safety system that complies with the highest process stability, precision and hygiene standards.

Further, Sophi is reported to be the first completely wireless phaco system with a simple and straightforward design.

“The complexity is inside the device, which allows for ease of use and increased efficiency,” Rayner said. “Sophi opens up new avenues in safety – the IOP control pump is designed for high chamber stability.”

Efficiency

Sophi user Dr Erik Mertens, said that the system has increased his workflow efficiency.

“Sophi makes it possible for me to personalise all kinds of parameters in venturi and perstaltic pump situations obtaining chamber stability and followability for every type of crystalline lens,” he said.

“By doing this I can work in total safety without compromising on an efficient workflow.”
