Welcome to People on the move – November 2021, Insight’s monthly bulletin to keep the Australian ophthalmic sector updated on new appointments and personnel changes.
If you’d like to tell the market about a new person in your company, practice, or clinic, please send the person’s name, position, image and a short description about their role to editor Myles Hume for consideration at myles.hume@primecreative.com.au.
Dr Clare Manderson – Cylite
Melbourne Hyperparallel OCT manufacturer Cylite has further expanded its R&D team with the appointment of optical physicist Dr Clare Manderson. She has spent her career applying optical physics to solve problems in engineering and biomedical science by adapting and building laser-based microscopy and super-resolution imaging systems from the ground up. The company believes her skill set is ideally suited to OCT, with her PhD being completed in the field of coherent diffraction imaging. “I’m excited to join the Cylite team because I get to work with high-end optical systems in cutting-edge eye diagnostic equipment,” she said.
A/Prof Guei-Sheung (Rick) Liu – Centre for Eye Research Australia
Associate Professor Guei-Sheung (Rick) Liu has been appointed into the role of principal investigator and will be leading CERA’s Genetic Engineering Research Unit. After working for the last four-and-a-half years at the University of Tasmania, Liu – who completed his postdoc at CERA – plans to investigate new treatments for eye disease using advanced genetic technology. “My research group will focus on using gene editing technology to treat a range of inherited retinal diseases that are caused by a faulty gene. This new technology is actually able to correct the faulty gene and make it normal again, which could fundamentally cure the disease,” he said.
Dr Rod O’Day – Centre for Eye Research Australia
Honorary researcher Dr Rod O’Day has been appointed to head up a new Ocular Oncology Research Unit at CERA, as a principal investigator. He is a consultant ophthalmologist at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital specialising in ocular oncology, and recently returned from the UK after undertaking training to build his clinical skills treating patients with eye tumours. “The main aim I have with my research is to develop better techniques to estimate how malignant an eye tumour is. We will develop various techniques to help us better distinguish between a benign mole and a malignant melanoma,” he said.
Judy Kwan – Bausch + Lomb
Judy Kwan recently joined Bausch + Lomb as professional services manager, leading clinical product education and optometric support across Australia. She has over 15 years of experience in clinical practice, contact lens research and clinical supervision of optometry students. She has been heavily involved and is very passionate about providing contact lens education across Australia.
