Prof Andrew Chang – Opthea
Sydney vitreoretinal surgeon and ophthalmologist Professor Andrew Chang is the only Australian on Opthea’s newly-formed Medical Advisory Board. The Melbourne-based, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company is developing novel therapies for retinal diseases, including neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Prof Chang is among 10 retina thought leaders from countries around the world including the US, Argentina, Australia, China, France, Germany, and Israel, who will join the board. He holds academic appointments of Conjoint Professor of the Department of Surgery UNSW and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney. He is a consultant ophthalmologist and the head of ophthalmology at the Sydney Eye Hospital, and the medical director of Sydney Retina Clinic, Australia.
Dr Antony Clark & Professor Angus Turner – Lions Eye Institute
The Lions Eye Institute (LEI) has appointed Dr Antony Clark and Professor Angus Turner as new board directors. Dr Clark is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the LEI, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital. He has many research interests and leads the WA ATOM (Atropine for the Treatment of Myopia) Study into childhood myopia. Meanwhile, Prof Turner is the McCusker Director of Lions Outback Vision. His research is conducted through The University of Western Australia’s Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science and he serves as a Clinical Lecturer for the Rural Clinical School at UWA, Notre Dame University and Curtin University.
Dan Vickers – Opticare
Dan Vickers is the new Business Development Manager for Opticare in Queensland. He started his career in the UK and has a wealth of experience in lab, wholesale, and retail optics. He also worked in the Rx section of Maui Jim and had been an Account Manager in NSW and Queensland for OSA and Essilor. Outside work, Vickers is passionate about sports and fitness and has participated in triathlons and done city-to-surf every year for the past eight years. He will be based in Opticare’s Brisbane office.
Professor Peter van Wijngaarden – The Florey
Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) Deputy Director and Head of Ophthalmic Neuroscience, Prof Peter van Wijngaarden, has been appointed Executive Director of The Florey. Commenting on his appointment to the largest brain research centre in the Southern Hemisphere, he said he was excited to be working with scientists leading the world in “fundamental discoveries in neuroscience and improving diagnostics and treatments for an impressive range of mental health and brain-related conditions”.
