German ophthalmic device manufacturer OCULUS has debuted its Pentacam Cornea OCT system at ESCRS 2024.
According to the family-run company that now produces 150 products at its Wetzlar headquarters, the technology combines Scheimpflug technology with the world’s first pericentric OCT scanning system.
The system is expected to be available in Australia later in 2025.
“In a matter of just one second, cornea specialists are provided with Scheimpflug images and ultra high-resolution OCT images of the cornea,” a statement said.
“Both measurements are taken simultaneously at the very same locations, enabling immediate and detailed visualisation of all anomalies.”
The combination of Cornea OCT and Scheimpflug imaging is said to allow for comprehensive corneal assessment, providing precise measurements of all refractive layers and detailed visualisation of sublayers.
The company said this is crucial for early ectasia detection, optimal surgical planning and post-operative care.
Professor Renato Ambrósio Jr, an internationally recognised expert in corneal diagnostics, said: “The Pentacam Cornea OCT illuminates the intricate layers of the cornea with such precision, it’s like turning on a light in a dark room.”
The system is compatible with all existing Pentacam examination data, regardless of the model and software version. This compatibility simplifies follow-up examinations and progression analysis, OCULUS stated.
Attendees at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Barcelona in September 2024 experienced the Pentacam Cornea OCT live on the OCULUS booth.
Experts also presented initial trial results at a fully attended Lunch Symposium on Saturday 7 September.
