A new scholarship in honour of the late Dr Con Moshegov will provide a NSW-based eyecare professional with an opportunity to expand their knowledge and network in ophthalmology.
The prominent New South Wales ophthalmologist and father-of-two passed away in January this year after battling COVID-19.
Moshegov practised at George Street Eye Centre in Sydney’s CBD. He was among Australia’s most respected and trusted experts in cataract, refractive and corneal surgery, with over 25 years’ experience.
RANZCO’s NSW branch has announced the Dr Con Moshegov New South Wales Scholarship includes complimentary registration to the combined NSW branch Annual Scientific Meeting and ophthalmology updates meeting on 27-28 August in Sydney, plus accommodation and access to all social events, valued at approximately $2,000.
Dr Alina Zeldovich is chair of the NSW RANZCO committee, which established and funded the scholarship.
“Dr Con Moshegov was instrumental on the NSW branch committee and has been one of the most long serving members, 12 years, fulfilling many roles including chair,” she said.
“He was always a major contributor to scientific meetings and added his own person spin and fun to any agenda.”
The scholarship is open to a junior ophthalmologist, registrar, orthoptist, ophthalmic nurse, or optometrist who must be a NSW resident with Ahpra registration.
Applicants are required to submit a written statement outlining the benefits they are seeking from attending the NSW branch Annual Scientific Meeting and a written statement outlining how they will contribute to the advancement of collaborative care arrangements, outreach or mentoring.
Applications close 29 July 2022.
The new scholarship is separate to the George Street Eye Centre Scholarship at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in Orthoptics, which Moshegov established to support students from remote, rural or interstate Australia.
Since his passing, UTS has also established the Dr Con Moshegov Memorial Award in Orthoptics.
“UTS Fund contributions will ensure that the incredible impact Dr Moshegov had during his lifetime, continues for many years to come in the way of supporting UTS Orthoptics students commencing from 2022 who reside outside Sydney, rural, remote, interstate or with refugee background to succeed in this rewarding and vital field,” the university’s website explained.
