Tokai Optical has launched a unique material designed by its in-house R&D team – and available across most of its products – to protect lutein, one of two major carotenoids found in the human eye.
“Today’s screen-based lifestyle exposes our eyes to a far greater amount of blue light than ever before. The daily use of smartphones, tablets and computers means our eyes can be exposed for an average of 8-10 hours per day for adults and 4-6 hours for children,” the company said.
“Lutein is not a naturally occurring nutrient found in the body. We absorb it by eating spinach, broccoli, sprouts, and other yellow and green vegetables. It is critical in preventing our eyes from ageing, reducing the chances of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and damage to the retina by absorbing HEV blue light and lowering the oxidative stress in the eye.”
Tokai says its new material, Lutina, is providing the market with the first and only optical lenses capable of blocking 100% of UV light and approximately 94% of high-energy visible (HEV) blue light from 400nm to 420nm in various lens materials and categories.
Lutina is available across most Tokai Optical products, including indexes 1.50, 1.60, 1.67 and our 1.76, currently the thinnest lenses in the world. It is available across a wide range of single vision and progressive lens designs, including indoor, every day, anti-fatigue and office lenses.
The new material is fully tintable, up to 85% solid or graduated in various colours, making it the perfect addition to a pair of sunglasses, the company said.
“As Lutina is a material, not a coating, it is possible to pair it with several of Tokai’s specially designed coatings for added benefits. Combine our USC (Ultra Shield Coat) plus ESC (Eternal Skin Coat) and BDC (Blue light Damage Control) to achieve ultra-scratch resistance plus infrared protection and total protection against blue light,” Tokai stated.
Lutina-Photochromatic is also available to provide wearers with a colour change option and ensure wearers get the best possible protection indoors and outdoors.
