Keynote speaker Professor James Wolffsohn leads nearly 100 sessions on offer in the newly released conference program for O=MEGA and the 4th World Congress of Optometry (WCO) taking place in Melbourne, Australia from 8-10 September 2023.
Wolffsohn, a Professor of Optometry at Aston University since 2000, will present to delegates about ‘The Power of Consensus’.
“My address is about feeling secure in how you practice, giving your patients a better service, and embracing change in a safe and secure way,” he said.
“With more and more journals on offer these days, it’s difficult to keep up with all the literature and impossible to be an expert in everything optometrically. By experts critically appraising the available literature and reaching consensus, it creates a reference for others to look up what they need to know, rather than rely on knowledge from their university days which becomes outdated at an increasing rate due to technology.”
The O=MEGA23/WCO4 conference program features a diverse range of topics and themes, including professional practice, Indigenous eye health, traumatic brain injury, public health, systemic disease, optometric education and myopia management, among many others.
Ms Amanda Trotman, acting CEO of the Optical Distributors and Manufacturers Association (ODMA) said new to the format this year will be a Masterclass program featuring two separate streams – one for dispensing and one for practice management topics.
The practice management stream will cover topics such as inventory management, succession planning and building a myopia practice. The dispensing stream will cover topics such as lens and lifestyle needs for presbyopes, the emerging field of repeated low level red light therapy for myopia, ‘top tips’ sessions and common dispensing myths and misconceptions.
“We are excited to offer these streams in addition to the main clinical conference to provide tailored content for all roles within the practice so that the whole team can benefit from O=MEGA23/WCO4. The low price and ability to book one or multiple sessions allows for flexibility and enables for one or more sessions to be attended while team members visit the O=MEGA Trade Fair,” Trotman said.

The conference will also feature the O=MEGA Trade Fair, showcasing the latest technologies, products and services from leading organisations within the sector.
The bi-annual O=MEGA event is the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, while the World Congress of Optometry is an international event hosted in a different city across the world also on a bi-annual basis. This partnership is a unique alignment and rare opportunity to combine a national and international audience to create the largest optometry conference in the country.
