Optometry engagement manager at EssilorLuxottica AMY PILLAY discusses the union of Myopia Leaders in May 2024, and the myopia control measures in place to ensure best practice.
Myopia Leaders from across Australia and New Zealand assembled at the EssilorLuxottica office in Sydney to “advocate, educate, and lead best practices” in myopia control. The meeting, held on 7 May 2024, was attended by 40 eager, passionate, and enthusiastic optometrists.
The Myopia Leaders discussed trends and barriers related to myopia control observed in 2024. They emphasised the importance of integrating myopia control touchpoints at every stage of the customer journey and recommended collaborating as a store team to ensure patients receive the highest standard of myopia control care.
EssilorLuxottica highlighted the collaborative effort driven by the retail and optometry teams. Optometrists are encouraged to hold meetings with their store teams to ensure everyone understands the importance and benefits of myopia control.
The 2023 Myopia Leaders led the group discussions addressing common barriers and solutions for prescribing best practice myopia control. Insights from these discussions will be shared with the broader network of optometrists.
Four 2023 Myopia Leaders were selected to film a short video about the four main methods of myopia control, including the mechanism of action, benefits, side effects, and associated resources. The chosen optometrists were Mr Daniel Wong, Ms Tiffany Lee, Ms Mehek Dutta and Ms Coco Cui. These videos aim to enhance best practices in myopia control within the network.
Dr Rohan Hughes from Queensland University of Technology provided an update on the latest research in myopia control options including the Stellest lens, MiSight contact lenses, orthokeratology (orthoK), and atropine dosage. CooperVision provided additional information about MiSight lenses.
The Myopia Leaders have highlighted the latest trends, challenges, and solutions in myopia control, emphasising the importance of comprehensive care throughout the customer journey. The collaborative efforts and passion demonstrated by our leaders, especially through their informative video on the main methods of myopia control, underscore our commitment to raising awareness and improving patient outcomes. Together, we can continue to make a significant impact in this field.
