The study investigated 205 open globe injuries (OGIs) over a six-year period, which included 80 open globe ruptures, 71 penetrating eye injuries (PEIs), 48 intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) and six perforating injuries. Aside from determining the cause of OGIs, the research also recorded best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) before and after treatment.A fall was responsible for 33 globe ruptures and it was determined that they predominated in older age groups compared to the other causes of injury. Of these cases, 82% had a history of previous intraocular surgery.Additionally, more than half of the 20 OGI cases in which alcohol was deed a factor were due to an assault, while PEIs and IOFBs commonly occurred among younger adults during metalwork.The information is significant because OGIs account for 44% of the cost of ocular trauma in Australia. It’s also estimated that 90% of ocular trauma is preventable.Aside from these findings, it’s hoped that the initial BCVA will be useful for non-ophthalmologists who are unfamiliar with the ocular trauma score to help predict the BCVA following treatment.
