Lumibird Medical has announced plans to acquire its long-standing distribution partner, BIZ MEDIC SDN BHD, in a move that will establish a new Southeast Asian hub and accelerate its expansion across the Asia-Pacific region.
The proposed acquisition, revealed on 8 April 2026, would see the Kuala Lumpur-based distributor integrated into Lumibird Medical’s operations, forming Lumibird Medical Southeast Asia – a regional centre intended to drive growth in what the company describes as a high-potential ophthalmology market.
The transition from a distributor model to a direct subsidiary reflects a broader strategic shift for the company, with Southeast Asia identified as a key frontier for eyecare due to high rates of vision impairment, including myopia, glaucoma and retinal diseases, alongside increasing healthcare investment.
As part of the restructure, Lumibird Medical will centralise its regional operations in Malaysia, while closing its representative office in Thailand and its subsidiary in India.
BIZ MEDIC SDN BHD has partnered with Lumibird Medical since 2004. The integration is expected to combine the distributor’s local market knowledge with the company’s global technology portfolio, strengthening clinical support and service delivery to ophthalmologists across Southeast Asia.
Lumibird Medical director Jean-Marc Gendre said the acquisition represents a significant milestone in the company’s global strategy.
“Southeast Asia is not just a growing market; it is the most populous region with the highest unmet needs in ophthalmology,” he said. “By establishing this office, we are moving closer to our customers and patients, ensuring that our technologies are supported by a world-class regional service centre.”
The deal is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2026. Once complete, the new hub will consolidate distribution of the Quantel Medical, Optotek Medical and Ellex product portfolios, creating a unified brand presence tailored to the regulatory and clinical demands of the Southeast Asian market.
