Prof McCluskey provided an overview of some of the activities of the SSI, the research programmes in progress, and the relevance of genetics to eye disease. He also noted that while it seed to the casual observer that ophthalmologists and the SSI appeared to be focused on the eyes only, he assured those in attendance that looks can be deceiving, they are aware of the bigger picture (eye probls can be just a part of a condition that also affects other organs), and the impression gained is related largely to their expertise being more ‘obvious’ rather than a narrow view of the case being taken.
