The technology, which has been dubbed Yuniku after the Japanese word for ‘unique’, was launched in Septber at SILMO Paris as a SILMO d’Or award nominee in the equipment category. It is a collaboration between lens supplier Hoya, international 3D printing software and services provider Materialise, and European eyewear design studio Hoet, and is said to be able to produce “the world’s first 3D tailored eyewear that is designed entirely around the optimal vision of the wearer”.{{quote-A:R-W:450-Q: Yuniku uses a “vision-centric” approach that begins by assessing the patient’s visual needs and facial features. }}According to Hoya, Yuniku uses a “vision-centric” approach that begins by assessing the patient’s visual needs and facial features. This is achieved through advanced software that scans the patient’s face, calculates the ideal position of the lenses in relation to their eyes, then designs the frame based on those unique parameters. The patient chooses from an exclusive range of frame designs, colours and finishes to suit their individual style and are given the opportunity to review a virtual image of what they will look like in the selected eyewear, which is displayed on a screen.3D printing is then used to further tailor the frame in accordance with the patient’s visual, comfort and aesthetic requirents. A selection of progressive, single vision or indoor lenses are offered to complete the final product. It was said that Yuniku provided opticians with the opportunity to deliver more effective interaction and service to their patents, enhancing their buying experience. The use of 3D printing was also said to open up new distribution possibilities and eliminate the stock risks common to the eyewear industry.“Yuniku is an exciting step forward in custom eyewear,” Hoya Vision Care’s vice president of global marketing, Mr Jon Warrick, stated. “By capitalising on advances in 3D printing technology, we have roved the limitations posed by traditional spectacles. For the first time, wearers can enjoy the ultimate in optical performance, without compromising on style or fit.”
