According to the results, Optimel Antibacterial Manuka Eye Gel – which is comprised of 98% leptospermum species honey – outperformed two other treatments in relieving the symptoms of meibomian gland disease (MGD) induced dry eye. The patients who used the honey therapy reported their eyes felt better and less gritty, and most chose to continue with the treatment after the study concluded. The eight-week study involved 114 people with evaporative dry eye brought on by moderate to advanced MGD. Patients were then randomly split into three groups; those who received twice-daily the 98% honey gel plus a conventional therapy of warm compresses, lid massage and preservative-free lubricant; another group which twice-daily use eye drops comprising 16% honey plus conventional therapy; and a third group which underwent conventional therapy alone. While all groups recorded significant improvent over the period of the study, those in the 98% group experienced improved meibum quality and gland expressibility, while the eye drops group showed the most improvent with regard to staining. The antibacterial nature of both honey treatments saw Staphylococcus epidermis counts drop significantly, however, it was more pronounced in the eye drop group. The study, published in Clinical and Experimental Optometry, reported a few drop outs due to tporary redness and stinging around the eye, but overall the trial garnered positive results.
