HICAPS and American Express expand partnership

American Express is expanding its partnership with Health Industry Claims and Payments Service (HICAPS) to enable 90,000 healthcare providers, including optometrists, to accept American Express payments.

It will also enable American Express card members, the ability to earn membership rewards points when visiting a HICAPS provider.

The expanded partnership coincides with the roll-out of HICAPS’ new “best-in-class” trinity payment terminals which are designed to streamline the patient payment experience with fast claim processing among 100% of private health insurers in Australia. The rollout is expected to be complete by the end of 2024.

For practices, this is said to reduce the need to manually inputting claims, transactions and quoting which reduces administration requirements.

Mr Robert Tedesco, vice president and general manager of global merchant services at American Express, emphasised the value of the partnership to healthcare providers and patients alike.

“Digitisation and automation are priorities for many businesses wanting to simplify the payments process, both for customers and themselves,” he said.

“Today’s announcement bolsters our commitment to supporting healthcare providers by removing friction at the checkout, while allowing our card members to earn reward points for essential health services needed every year.”

Tedesco said 71% of American Express card members say they are more likely to return to a business that accepts American Express.

“With that, we hope healthcare providers will see increased customer loyalty and repeat business with American Express automatically enabled in their payment process,” he said.

Mr Simon Terry, executive for HICAPS, said the partnership would streamline health bill payments.

“One of most common pain points for both practices and patients when it comes to paying a health bill is speed and flexibility. HICAPS has been dedicated to delivering ease, speed, and reliability and since 2014 we’ve achieved this in partnership with American Express,” he said.

“We’re proud to support more than 90,000 healthcare providers across Australia and today’s announcement will help further reduce administration and complexity for practices, while offering more choice to patients.”
