Some of the world’s top names in ophthalmology have provided insights in a webinar on the new RayOne Galaxy intraocular lens (IOL), labelled by one as the only refractive full-range-of-focus IOL on the market.
Prominent Italian cataract surgeon Dr Francesco Carones moderated a webinar (available here) on the IOL with a world-first non-diffractive spiral optic that aims to deliver what manufacturer, Rayner, describes as a smooth and continuous full range of vision, with minimised dysphotopsia and 0% loss of transmitted light.
During the online event webinar, Dr Carones said RayOne Galaxy was “the only refractive full-range-of-focus IOL, providing high levels of spectacle independence without compromise on dysphotopsia”.
Mr Raphael Neuhann, FEBO, from Eye Clinic Munich, proceeded with an overview of how the unique spiral optic works, followed by outcomes from the RayOne Galaxy in a pre-clinical study in Austria, which demonstrated the Galaxy’s superior contrast sensitivity when compared to traditional diffractive trifocal IOLs.
It also showed that its halo size was closer to that of an enhanced monofocal IOL, suggesting a more comfortable visual experience for patients.
Dr Basak Bostanci, form Istanbul, Turkey, then delivered findings from a real-world international study that involved 10 surgeons from 10 countries.
She revealed excellent binocular vision at all distances, with stable results after just one month of implantation. The binocular defocus curves showed a smooth plateau of vision from +0.5 D to -2.5 D, with a range of focus across nearly four dioptres.
Finally, Mr Allon Barsam, from OCL Vision in London, shared his personal experience with the spiral lens. He noted patients experience less visual interference due to the unique design, making it a game-changer in IOL technology.
Concluding with a Q&A session which answered questions from attending ophthalmologists around the world, the webinar showcased why RayOne Galaxy represents a significant step forward in the outcomes that can be offered to lens replacement patients.
