A “groundbreaking” program by Sydney company Circular Eyewear is reinventing the lifecycle of eyewear, transforming discarded frames into high-quality, traceable new products tailored for the needs of optical professionals and their customers.
The Australian company says the program is part of its work to “lead the charge in redefining sustainability within the optical industry”.
At its launch on 12 November, 2024, the company unveiled Objekt Eyewear, a premium range of spectacles, alongside Spexcycle – Australia’s first closed-loop eyewear recycling initiative.
“We’re redefining what’s possible in the optical industry,” says Mr Chris Savage, founder of Circular Eyewear.
“Spexcycle and Objekt Eyewear represent a critical step towards building a circular economy within our field, setting new benchmarks for innovation and responsible manufacturing.”
Launched in December 2024, Spexcycle offers optometry practices a free, easy-to-adopt program designed to combat eyewear waste.
A media release said this unique initiative enabled practices to collect used frames, which are then processed to reclaim raw materials and transform them into sustainable, elegant new eyewear pieces.
A location finder will also guide eco-conscious consumers to participating stores, allowing optometry practices to showcase their commitment to sustainability.
The launch also spotlighted Objekt Eyewear, a premium sunglasses collection that marries sustainability with craftsmanship.
“This innovative range was made possible through strategic collaborations with industry leaders,” the media release said.
Young Henrys Brewery contributed over 1,500 aluminium beer cans, which were reimagined into distinctive temple arms for the Objekt frames.
Meanwhile, Rodenstock Australia provided premium sunglass lenses for the limited-edition release, ensuring exceptional optical quality.
“Our partners have been integral to bringing this vision to life,” said Savage. “Their support not only elevates our products but showcases the power of collaboration in driving meaningful change in the optical industry.”
The debut collection features the Servo and Classic sunglasses, now available for purchase. In addition, six styles of ophthalmic frames previewed at the event will launch in March 2025, with pre-orders open now.
