The international ophthalmic sector has heard from a star panel of early implanters of the world-first spiral intraocular lens (IOL) design from Rayner, RayOne Galaxy and Galaxy Toric, that is approved in Australia and will be available soon.
The British cataract surgery product manufacturer recently launched the lens designed with artificial intelligence (AI) and in partnership with Dr João Lyra from Brazil.
The launch event took place at the 2024 European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Congress in early September in Barcelona with Rayner hosting a lunchtime symposium that attracted more than 600 surgeons.
Dr Basak Bostanci from Turkey moderated a panel of early implanters, including Mr Allon Barsam (UK), Dr Claudette Abela-Formanek (Austria), Dr Alain Saad (France) and Dr Dean Corbett (New Zealand).
The audience heard from these surgeons on the excellent early outcomes and how the spiral optic works to elongate focus and minimise dysphotopsia, Rayner stated.
Dr Corbett presented video testimonials from his first two patients who reported excellent visual acuity with no halos or bothersome nighttime visual disturbance.
“The Rayner booth was a buzz of activity throughout the four-day congress with ophthalmologists from around the world coming to learn more about this next generation IOL,” Rayner said.
According to the company, a proprietary AI engine trained on patient outcomes was used to help create RayOne Galaxy’s unique spiral, which delivers a continuous full range of vision with minimised dysphotopsia, achieved through a non-diffractive optic with 0% light loss.
RayOne Galaxy will be available immediately in toric powers and comes fully preloaded across the entire power range in the same single-use injector system as the rest of the RayOne family of lenses.
The RayOne Galaxy will soon be available in Australia, but without a healthcare reimbursement listing to begin with.
