EssilorLuxottica has secured two recent acquisitions opening new capabilities in its ophthalmic lens production.
The first occurred on 21 July 2025 when the group revealed a deal with South Korean company PUcore for its assets and entities involved in the development, manufacturing and sale of monomers used in the production of high index ophthalmic lenses.
The second acquisition was announced 4 August 2025 involving Automation & Robotics (A&R), a renowned player in the design and manufacture of automated systems for optical lens quality control, serving both mass production facilities and prescription laboratories.
The PUcore acquisition will enhance EssilorLuxottica’s R&D and production capabilities for manufacturing high index, thinner and lighter ophthalmic lenses, and ensure long term sustainable sourcing.
The deal involves a R&D unit, a materials production facility and a sales office in the Republic of Korea. As part of the transaction, EssilorLuxottica will also acquire an intellectual property portfolio for the formulations of products and production processes.
“We are happy to welcome PUcore’s optical division and its talented teams into our group. In line with our commitment to elevating standards in the research, development and manufacturing of ophthalmic lenses, this addition will allow us to widen our portfolio of patents, technologies and know-how and extend our expertise upstream in the value chain,” said Mr Francesco Milleri, chairman and CEO, and Mr Paul du Saillant, deputy CEO, at EssilorLuxottica.
“By continuing to improve the production and formulation of high index monomers, we will raise the bar for the performance and sustainability of the processes and supplies used across the entire ophthalmic industry.”
The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2025 pending regulatory approvals and other conditions.
A&R strengths industrial solutions portfolio
In the A&R deal, EssilorLuxottica said the Belgian firm had “built a strong reputation in advanced optical metrology” thanks to proprietary technologies, supporting lens manufacturers in the digital transformation of their production processes.
With a track record of innovation – ranging from high-precision machine applications to sophisticated software solutions – A&R brings deep expertise across the value-chain, EssilorLuxottica said in a statement.
“The integration of A&R into EssilorLuxottica’s portfolio of industrial solutions marks another milestone in our ongoing journey to set new standards of excellence in our industry,” Milleri and du Saillant said.
“Sharing a commitment to innovation, precision and service, we will be able to better support the evolving needs of ophthalmic manufacturing, including those of new categories like wearables. This move is a key step towards advancing the future of vision care through quality and performance, by strengthening our technological platform.”
