CooperVision has announced the launch of a new sustainability platform aimed at improving how its contact lenses are sourced, manufactured and packaged, beginning with its MyDay daily disposable range.
The company said the initiative, the MADE BETTER Promise, builds on years of innovation and focuses on “smarter, more purposeful choices” across the product lifecycle, with an emphasis on reducing carbon impact and material waste.
CooperVision said its MyDay lenses produced under the MADE BETTER framework were made with less carbon through changes to packaging materials and manufacturing processes. These include the introduction of ISCC PLUS-certified materials in packaging, making the company the first contact lens manufacturer to adopt this certification for its blister packs.
The plastic used in MyDay blister packaging is now 100% ISCC PLUS-certified bio-attributed material, sourced and allocated through a mass balance approach, the company said. It added that this shift does not change the safety or performance of the product.
Manufacturing improvements are also central to the initiative. CooperVision said it has implemented next-generation technologies to improve efficiency, reduce waste and optimise resource use. Across its MyDay production facilities, more than 90% of manufacturing waste is recycled, while lower-carbon energy sources are being used where possible to reduce emissions.
The MADE BETTER Promise also incorporates the company’s existing plastic neutrality program in partnership with Plastic Bank. Through this initiative, CooperVision funds the collection and recycling of plastic waste equivalent in weight to a portion of the plastic used in its participating soft contact lenses.
To date, the program has supported the collection and recycling of more than 660 million plastic bottles from coastal areas at high risk of pollution, according to the company. It also delivers social benefits to participating communities, including access to essential goods and services.
Aldo Zucaro, senior director of corporate responsibility at CooperCompanies, said sustainability progress at CooperVision begins with innovation across materials and manufacturing.
“The MADE BETTER Promise reflects how we are turning those innovations into real-world impact through thoughtful choices that benefit both people and the planet,” he said, adding that practitioners and patients would continue to receive the same MyDay lenses, now with a lower carbon footprint.
CooperVision said the launch marks the beginning of a broader commitment to continuous improvement, with plans to expand the MADE BETTER approach across its product portfolio over time.
