A growing body of evidence showing myopia progression is associated with choroid thinning over time will be discussed at the 2023 Myopia Progression in Children Conference (MPIC) next month.
“What is exciting is the possible indication of treatment success with what seems to be short-term choroid thickening as an early response to myopia control treatments,” Myopia Australia founder and event organiser, Dr Loren Rose, said.
“New therapies are rapidly changing our treatment arm of myopia control in children. In Australia, the options have increased from one peripheral defocus spectacle lens available a year ago to four different spectacle design styles based on peripheral defocus. The landscape now includes red light therapy and robust studies on different concentrations of atropine drops,” she said.
Rose added that the recently published 2023 International Myopia Institute White Papers also outline the growing evidence for the onset and progression of myopia in young adults, potentially increasing treatment strategies in this age group as well.
“These new strategies and treatment algorithms will be discussed at MPIC alongside the opportunity to learn about the new technology introduced since 2022 and updates on equipment with products demonstration,” she said.
“Five speakers with extensive experience in myopia progression in children will present difficult cases in an open forum. The day promises to provide comprehensive learning in an interactive environment.”
MPIC 2023 will take place on 10 June at the Novotel Darling Harbour in Sydney.
