Canberra Hospital has become the first in Australia to install and operate the Optos Silverstone RGB ultra-wide field imaging device, introducing new laser eye imaging technology aimed at improving diagnosis and patient care across the ACT.
Now fully operational at the hospital’s Eye Clinic, the device captures highly detailed images of the eye in less than half a second, delivering a 200-degree view of the retina in a single image – something that previously required multiple photographs. It also enables detailed assessment of retinal blood flow and high-resolution retinal scans.
ACT Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said the technology represented a significant advancement in eye health services.
“What makes this technology particularly important is the difference it will make for patients, with faster appointments, clearer results, potentially reducing the need for dilating drops and multiple tests while improving comfort, especially for children and people with reduced mobility,” she said.
“For clinicians, better visualisation will lead to more detailed and accurate diagnosis and earlier detection of eye disease, making their work more efficient and improving job satisfaction.”
She added the ACT was the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce the Optos system, describing it as an example of how investment in advanced diagnostic equipment can strengthen the public health system and improve patient outcomes.
Ophthalmologist Dr Jane Wells said the device delivers improved image quality compared to previous systems.
“The Optos Silverstone RGB device provides much better quality and truer-to-life colour images than previous devices,” she said.
“This new device gives us the ability to better diagnose, monitor and treat retinal disorders which have the potential to be sight threatening.”
Dr Wells said the acquisition places the Canberra Hospital Eye Clinic “at the forefront of retinal imaging and investigations in the country”.
Ophthalmology clinic coordinator Barb O’Brien said the technology would also improve the patient experience.
“For many people, the process will now be quicker, easier and more comfortable with some patients no longer requiring dilating drops prior to capturing images,” she said.
“It is especially helpful for young children and people who need accessible equipment. We’re really proud to be offering this level of care.”
