The University of Melbourne was rated the fourth best tertiary institution globally in the field of ophthalmology, while the University of Sydney was two places lower in sixth.CWUR rankings measure the quality of education and training of students, as well as the prestige of the faculty mbers and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.According to the CWUR, a specially designed algorithm that records the number of research articles in top-tier journals – and their influence – also helps determine rankings.The UK’s University College London topped the list, followed by the US’ Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University. Aside from the US, Australia was the only country to have more than one institution in the top 10.Managing director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia – a close affiliate of Melbourne University’s Department of Ophthalmology – Professor Jonathan Crowston, thanked researchers, students, staff and supporters “who have put us in this excellent position.”CWUR publishes the only global university ranking that does not rely on surveys and university data submissions. It began in 2012 with the aim of rating the top 100 universities internationally, but has since expanded to include the top 1,000 from more than 26,000 degree-granting institutions worldwide.
