The survey, commissioned by OPSM, revealed the average Australian gets 7.4 hours of sleep every night, yet looks at screens for more than 9.5 hours, or one-third, of each day. This equates to 143 full days a year. The statistics are even more extre for office workers, who are exposed to 11.4 hours of harmful blue light daily. Also notable was the time Generation Y Australians spent on smartphones in a typical day (three hours), and the 20% of working Australians who typically spend more than seven hours looking at a computer screen in an average day.More than half of the 1,000 survey respondents (58%) were concerned, or had negative feelings, about the amount of screen time they currently experience, with common concerns including tired eyes and the feeling that they were wasting their day.The detailed report also found that 79% of Australians would like to reduce the amount of blue light they were exposed to. However, most of those would prefer to do this by eliminating the negative effects of the technology rather than reducing screen time. The nationwide survey was conducted online and data was weighted to the latest population estimates taken from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It can be read here.
