The Australian College of Optometry (ACO) has extended the application deadline for its 2025 Advanced Certificate in Children’s Vision (ACCV) course.
Optometrists now have until 24 February to apply for this course, designed to enhance clinical expertise in paediatric eyecare.
A media release said the course equips optometrists with “the skills to confidently diagnose and manage paediatric conditions, including amblyopia, strabismus, myopia control, and paediatric ocular disease”.
“Designed with working professionals in mind, the course combines evidence-based learning with practical experience to ensure participants gain the confidence and skills to manage complex paediatric cases effectively.”
Ms Catherine Tay, Clinical Education co-ordinator of the course said: “Keeping up with the latest research and techniques is becoming increasingly essential in modern practice, particularly when managing the diverse and complex needs of young patients.”
Myopia diagnosis and management is a key element of the ACO’s six-month course.
“Increasingly, there is a critical need for early diagnosis of myopia, appropriate intervention and effective education with families to safeguard children’s visual development and overall health,” she said.
“Optometrists must be equipped to intervene early to ensure better lifelong outcomes for these young patients.”
The Children’s Vision certificate includes a clinical placement module, allowing participants to apply their skills under the guidance of an optometrist or ophthalmologist – an invaluable opportunity to build confidence in paediatric care.
“The ACO has been a trusted educator and advocate for community eye health for over 80 years, offering optometrists a flexible, expert-led learning experience with practical clinical exposure,” the release said.
A recent survey of certificate participants highlighted the course’s impact:
- 90% of graduates reported feeling more confident in assessing and managing paediatric patients.
- 100% agreed that the workload was manageable alongside work and life commitments.
