Oscar Wylee's philanthropic claims are called into question; wrongdoing denied

Oscar Wylee advertising vigorously promotes “for every pair of frames you purchase, a pair is donated to someone in need”. The claim, which seems to be contradicted by other claims, features on Oscar Wylee customer packaging and carry bags as well as website and social media platforms.

Lim is not Lim! Oscar Wylee’s website displays pictures and a story about Lim, a Cambodian optometrist who the company is “funding … to be an eye surgeon”. The picture is not Lim and he was never an optometrist so Oscar Wylee cannot be “funding” him to become an eye surgeon.

After Insight’s questions about its marketing claims, Oscar Wylee changed its Youtube Channel overnight. This image shows the previous references to Rose Charities and the statement: “Currently we have partnered with Rose Charities which builds sustainable eye care programs in Cambodia.”

Sokhoeun has difficulty seeing and Oscar Wylee says: “It's simple: he just needs some glasses so we, with a bit of help from Rose Cambodia, have made sure he has them.” Rose Charities’ officials refute these claims saying any suggestion of a partnership is “untrue and misleading”.

Another ‘one-for one’ claim, which was changed overnight. Product pages originally read: “For every pair of frames you purchase from us, a pair is donated to someone in need”, however they now read: “For every pair of glasses you purchased, a portion is donated to someone in need".

Confusing messaging: “For every eyewear sold, we help someone in need to affordable eyecare.” Oscar Wylee on Instagram.

Another ‘one-for one’ claim, this time on the company’s Twitter feed.

Customer tote bag promotion: “For every pair of frames you purchase, a pair is donated to someone in need”.

Youtube Channel changed following Insight’s questions. The image shows the deletion of references to Rose Charities and removal of the statement: “Currently we have partnered with Rose Charities which builds sustainable eye care programs in Cambodia.”

Media report with yet another claim: “The company works with the Sight for All Charity and Rose Charities Cambodia: they make a monthly donation to these non-profit organisations, commensurate to the cost of sourcing all the glasses sold in the past month.”
