Four hundred and forty one Specsavers Australia and New Zealand joint-venture partners attended its third annual, one-day Clinical Conference at Sydney's Hilton Hotel on14 September.SCC3 easily upheld the standards and cracking pace set by the two previous conferences. The 441 delegates registered for the event was a record, with a total of 21 CPD points on offer provided the multiple-choice questions that followed each lecture were answered successfully in the main (70% is widely accepted as the standard required).

However, a review of some of the MCQs used might be prudent because some recurring features in the actual questions asked are regarded as invalid in educational circles, e.g. the use of either 'All of the above' or 'None of the above' as distractors (incorrect answers).

The conference was opened by Mr Peter Larsen, Specsavers ANZ Director of Professional Services. Titled Optometric Clinical Excellence, his presentation revealed some interesting figures for the company's activities in Australia and New Zealand. The number of patients in the company's database now totals about 6 million, about 3 million eye examinations a year (ANZ) are delivered, and the average weekly consultations per store (more than 350 stores, ANZ) is 165.
