Flinders University in Adelaide has officially opened its new state-of-the-art teaching clinic. The $7.4 million teaching clinic—Flinders Vision Clinic—enables optometry student to undertake clinical training and provide optometry services to the South Australian community.Flinders Vision builds on 30 years of optometry working within ophthalmology at Flinders Medical Centre to provide eye care for people with diabetes, cataract, glaucoma, aged-related macular degeneration and paedeatric eye problems. It runs specialty clinics that not only provide a community service to patients but also provides students with high-volume clinical exposure to those patient groups.

"Patients with those problems find it difficult to access the limited volume of public hospital ophthalmology services and could readily be seen in the optometry setting and sorted into those that can be managed optometrically, and those that require ophthalmology," Professor Konrad Pesudovs, Flinders University's foundation chair of Optometry and Vision Science, School of Health Sciences, saidFlinders Vision also has specialty clinics in contact lenses, low vision, neuro-optometry/rehabilitation, sports vision, aviation and other occupational-vision and specialty-assessment clinics.
