04/07/2019By Myles Hume
Global authority on spectacle lens designs Professor Mo Jalie will join a host of international keynote speakers for the third Specsavers Dispensing Conference (SDC).

Taking place next month, Jalie will headline the national roadshow-style event and feature alongside Mr Donald Crichton, president of the Association of Dispensing Opticians New Zealand and vice president of the International Opticians Association (IOA), as well as Ms Alicia Thompson and Ms Miranda Richardson from the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO).

The one-day event, which aims improve dispensing standards across the entire profession, is also open to non-Specsavers staff, and will be held in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney from August 4–9.

Jalie, who is a renowned for his expertise on the design of spectacle lenses and author of the core dispensing text Principles of Ophthalmic Lenses, will travel from the UK to present on aspheric lenses.

He will discuss various types of aspherical surfaces, as well as how the surface astigmatism arises, and how to calculate the required asphericity. His presentation will also cover how this feature can be adopted to produce flatter, thinner lenses, and how the geometry of atoroidal surfaces can be used in the design of bi-aspheric lenses for astigmatic prescriptions.

Jalie‘s credentials extend into being appointed the Visiting Professor in Optometry at the UK’s Ulster University and Essilor Academy Europe. Among other achievements, he has also authored some 200 papers on ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses (IOLs) and dispensing, and holds patents for aspheric spectacle lenses and IOLs.

Examples of seemingly impossible dispensing requests to laboratories will also be presented for discussion.
