Alcon hosts ophthalmic nursing conference

10/10/2018By Matthew Woodley
More than 90 ophthalmic nurses from Australia and New Zealand attended Alcon’s annual ONWARD Conference last month, where they received information on processing standards, infection control, corneal health and more.

The educational program, developed by Alcon along with Associate Professor Geoffrey Painter and Mrs Kerrie Legg, Director and Registered Nurse, Chatswood Private Hospital took place at Alcon’s head office in Sydney and included presentations on cataract, glaucoma, astigmatism, presbyopia, ongoing ophthalmic nursing education and other technological advances.

The line up featured a number of high profile presenters, including the Save Sight Institute’s Professor Stephanie Watson and the Dean of Notre Dame University, Ms Sally Robertson.

Painter discussed technological advancements in cataract surgery and provided insights into what goes on in the background when addressing astigmatism with cataract surgery. NSW-based ophthalmologist Dr Season Yeung presented options on correcting refractive errors from contact lenses to surgical options.

Additionally, Robertson presented on balancing education and experience in ophthalmic nursing, while registered nurse Ms Deborah Clarke canvassed the latest changes in Processing Standards.

Attendees were also able to take part in a series of interactive workshops that provided nurses with the opportunity to practice phacoemulsification using a Centurion and practice lens insertion on model eyes with Alcon’s latest IOL, Clareon AutonoMe, and experience Alcon’s NGenuity 3D Visualisation system designed for ophthalmic surgery.

The next major ophthalmic nursing conference will take place at this year’s RANZCO meeting on November 18 in Adelaide.
