Specsavers local CPD event a success, more planned

30/05/2018By Matthew Woodley
Specsavers has continued to emphasise the importance of collaborative care, with one of its stores hosting a local ophthalmologist for an interactive CPD evening recently.

The event, which took place at Specsavers Highpoint in Melbourne, attracted a mix of local Specsavers staff as well as external optometrists, including locum eyecare professionals, who gathered for a presentation on optic nerve head assessment. According to Highpoint optometry partner Mr Naim Bashir, the success of the event has meant talks are underway to produce similar workshops, possibly on a quarterly basis.

“We’re starting to move away from lectures and slideshows and more towards interactive CPD, and we find that hands-on training is the most effective kind of training.”

“We held the event because we wanted to encourage the eye health professionals in the local area to work together cohesively,” Bashir said.

“It provided a great opportunity for networking. We also wanted to provide a different, hands-on CPD environment. We’re starting to move away from lectures and slideshows and more towards interactive CPD, and we find that hands-on training is the most effective kind of training.”

The guest speaker for the evening was head of ophthalmology at Northern Health, Dr Suheb Ahmed, who discussed common optic nerve head conditions that optometrists may encounter in clinical practice.

This was followed by an interactive discussion of case studies involving glaucoma assessment and management, which also highlighted the importance of OCT and visual fields analysis in glaucoma detection.

Ophthalmic medical technology company Glaukos, which produces the iStent and iStent inject minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) devices, sponsored the event, which was accredited for six therapeutic points.
