Intel cancels its Vaunt smartglasses project

Technology giant Intel has decided to abandon the development of its smartglasses project Vaunt, which utilised a tiny laser to send information directly onto the wearer’s retina.

In a statement to online tech news portal TechCrunch, Intel said it continuously works on new technologies and experiences, but that “not all of these develop into a product we choose to take to market.”

“The Superlight project is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated, consumer augmented reality glasses. We are going to take a disciplined approach as we keep inventing and exploring new technologies, which will sometimes require tough choices when market dynamics don’t support further investment,” the statement said.

Vaunt, codenamed Superlight, was developed by the company’s New Devices Group (NDG) founded in 2013. The near-imperceptible design differed greatly from previous attempts at smartglasses and generated some buzz, but only months after it was previewed online Intel confirmed the project had been abandoned.
