Optometry Australia taskforce reviews MBS items

23/05/2018By Matthew Woodley
Optometry Australia (OA) has established a taskforce to help it develop a set of recommendations on how the optometric services under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) should be amended.

The group’s remit is to develop recommendations that best meet the eye health needs of the population, which will then be presented to the Federal Government’s MBS Review Taskforce. According to OA, the group represents a wide cross section of members – from private practice, to academia, and corporate groups – as well as key senior representatives from the national body itself.

“The work being undertaken by our newly formed MBS Review Advisory Group will mean that Optometry Australia will be well-prepared when the Department of Health provides timelines on the formation of the committee to assist the taskforce with the review of optometric items.”

“The work being undertaken by our newly formed MBS Review Advisory Group will mean that Optometry Australia will be well-prepared when the Department of Health provides timelines on the formation of the committee to assist the taskforce with the review of optometric items,” OA CEO Ms Lyn Brodie said.

“Members of our advisory group have different experience from different contexts which we felt important to ensure that we were representing the broader optometry sector. They are tasked with contemporising the MBS so it works for optometrists and their patients.”

The group met recently to conduct a thorough analysis of the 32 MBS items currently on the optometry schedule, and it will then consider how the items work to meet patients’ needs and what needs to be done to contemporise the schedule.

Following this process, a broader group from within OA will review the findings before it is submitted to the government.
