Thirty-three new Fellows were admitted to the College at its annual graduation cerony.
Nearly 1,800 delegates, sponsors and exhibitors attended the event, with a packed program featuring local and international speakers, project launches, special-interest groups and an excellent trade exhibition.
The venue, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre at Southbank, was its usual first-class self.
As has become something of a tradition for RANZCO annual scientific programmes, the standards are high and getting higher each year. The Brisbane meeting was no exception and Sunday’s opening events offered a choice of the Allergan Breakfast (preservative-free medications and ocular surface disease) or the Abbott Medical Optics Breakfast (IOLs and presbyopia) that got the programme off to a flying, albeit early, start (06:30).
Saturday saw a full day of meetings, followed by a welcome reception at the Gallery of Modern Art in the evening.
The scientific program commenced the following day, with plenary sessions and smaller-group sessions.
That evening was the graduation cerony, followed by the president’s reception.
The opening address at the graduation cerony was by Ms Amanda Vanstone, followed by presentation of the College Medal to Associate Professor John Crompton and to Dr Michael Steiner, and then presentation of the Filipic Greer Medal to Dr James Slattery and the Howsam Medal to Dr Zoe Gao.
(Unlike at previous graduation ceronies, the changeover of presidency, with Dr Stephen Best passing the chain of office to Dr Bradley Horsburgh, was at the congress dinner.)
