New CEO for Vision 2020 Australia

27/06/2018By Matthew Woodley • Staff Journalist
Former optometrist and senior public servant Ms Judith Abbott has been appointed CEO of eye health organisation Vision 2020 Australia.

Abbott has held both clinical and managerial roles in the eye health sector, and also been involved with numerous areas in the Victoria public service, including health workforce and regulation, aged care and mental health. According to Vision 2020, she also has significant experience in policy, strategy service design and advocacy.

“There is still more to be done to support members and raise the profile around key issues for people at risk of or experiencing preventable vision loss or blindness.”

“Judith brings a combination of skills, experience and networks alongside a strong strategic focus that has proven very helpful in her time to date with our organisation,” Vision 2020 chair Ms Amanda Vanstone said.

“It has been obvious from her brief time in the job that she has very quickly got on top of the key issues in the eye health sector and has been actively and effectively engaging with Vision 2020 Australia members.”

In a statement released following her appointment, Abbott said she was pleased to have the opportunity to lead the organisation and work towards eliminating avoidable blindness and improving vision care.

“Returning to the eye health and vision care sector after 15 years, I can see that there has been much achieved through the cross sector collaboration that is fostered by Vision 2020 Australia,” Abbott said.

“There is still more to be done to support members and raise the profile around key issues for people at risk of or experiencing preventable vision loss or blindness. I look forward to making a significant contribution to Vision 2020 Australia and this important area.”

Abbott was appointed after former CEO Ms Carla Northam stepped down from the role at the beginning of June. Northam had been CEO since July 2016 and helped establish a number of key partnerships, including the collaborative Parliamentary Friends Group for Employment and Disability event in February.

Vision 2020 Australia was established in October 2000. Its mandate is to ensure that eye health and vision care remains high on the health, disability and international development agendas of Australian governments.
