Specsavers Dispensing Conference open to all

13/06/2018By Matthew Woodley • Staff Journalist
In a significant move, Specsavers has announced that its upcoming dispensing conference will be open to non-Specsavers staff, as a way to improve the standards of dispensing across the entire profession.

Headlining the Specsavers Dispensing Conference (SDC2) is Emeritus Professor Stephen Dain from UNSW, who will deliver a presentation on blue light, while other local and international presenters will also present on a range of topics, including Rx Analysis, contact lenses, and prescription safety eyewear.

“Only by working towards professional advancement collectively and by openly sharing knowledge and experience with our peers can we truly lift the standards of dispensing across the whole market.”
Steve O’Leary, Specsavers.

Specsavers director of product Mr Steve O’Leary said the event would add significant value to delegates’ professional development goals.

“Dispensing excellence has limited impact in isolation and that’s why this year we are opening the SDC up to non-Specsavers dispensers. Only by working towards professional advancement collectively and by openly sharing knowledge and experience with our peers can we truly lift the standards of dispensing across the whole market,” O’Leary said.

“We took the decision to make a major commitment in dispensing advancement and have invested alongside our partners to put more than 1,000 dispensers through Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing since 2013.

“We’re always working to develop our staff’s knowledge and expertise that, in turn, assists our customers and their journey through our stores. SDC is a critical part of that and gives dispensers a serious event of their own in Australia, which has not been available in this format for many years, if at all.”

SDC2 will also feature interactive workshops alongside the presentations, and thanks to its roadshow-style format, will visit Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth in August. Around 500 delegates across Australia attended the inaugural SDC last year.
