Customised contact lens manufacturer launches in Australia

16/05/2018By Matthew Woodley • Staff Journalist
European contact lens manufacturer mark’ennovy has launched in Australia, with the promise of offering its more than one billion separate parameter combinations on the local market.

The Spanish company specialises in individually crafted lenses that have their diameters, base curves, spheres, cylinders, axes and additions tailored specifically to each patient. The unique approach has seen the company expand from 30 employees to more than 190 since it was established in 1997, and founder and CEO Mr George Sarrouf said the company now distributes around one million contact lenses annually.

“Whether small or large corneas, astigmatism or presbyopia, the unrivalled combination of lenses, geometries and materials ensure that we are going to be able to guarantee you the best experience for your patient.”
Chris Harous, mark’ennovy Asia pacific managing director.

“Eyecare professionals should not have to sacrifice the best fit for their patients based on the limited parameters that mass-producers make available to optimise production efficiencies,” Sarrouf said.

“Instead, they should have access to the most precise diameter, base curve and correction in a lens that addresses the uniqueness of each eye perfectly, every time.”

The company says its silicone hydrogel lenses offer a low dehydration and modulus along with a high water content, while Class 1 UV and selective blue light filters protect the eye from upwards of 99% of UVB, 93% of UVA and 14% of blue-violet light. Meanwhile, the company says its bio-inspired hydrogel lens has high surface lubricity and low dehydration that helps it imitate the natural properties of the cornea.

According to a release announcing the launch, mark’ennovy’s current portfolio of lenses is available via a new ordering platform that has been specifically designed for Australia. The local team will be led by Asia Pacific managing director Mr Chris Harous, a contact lens specialist with more than 40 years’ experience in the industry.

“I have worked all my life in the contact lens industry and it is fantastic to be back sharing mark’ennovy’s passion to provide Australian eyecare professionals with premium, optometrist-only made to measure soft disposable contact lens products that can make the greatest impact on their patients’ vision and quality of life,” he said.

“Whether small or large corneas, astigmatism or presbyopia, the unrivalled combination of lenses, geometries and materials ensure that we are going to be able to guarantee you the best experience for your patient.”

Local collaboration

Prior to its arrival in Australia, mark’ennovy announced a partnership with the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) to bring to market new designs of soft contact lenses that aid with myopia management and address presbyopia.

The silicon hydrogel myopia management lens is set to be released in September and will feature BHVI’s patented Extended Depth of Focus design. It will also be available in an extended range of diameters, base curves and spherical powers.
